The Holland international was forced off during Munich’s 2-0 DFB-Pokal Cup win over Augsburg with a knee injury and will be sat in the stands for six weeks.

Robben scored the opening goal of the night in the fourth minute but was carried off just over 10 minutes later after he was caught on the knee by goalkeeper Marwin Hitz.

Munich club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller revealed the extent of the injury after the 29-year-old had further tests on Thursday.

He said: “Arjen has a deep cut, right into his knee joint.

"A stud put a lot of pressure on the femur in his right leg and there is a big build-up of blood."

Robben will now miss the remainder of 2013 and also the Club World Cup in Morocco and the Dutch superstar is distraught but has already set his sights on his return and vows to be better than ever.

He told the club website: “Of course I'm bitterly disappointed. I was in such good form and was looking forward to every game I was playing, and now this happens.

"But I'll come back fit and will then help the team reach the goals that we set ourselves before the start of the season."

Robben leaves Munich at the top of the Bundesliga league ladder with 38 points from 14 points and have yet to lose a game this season.

Fans of Munich will be wary what effect the absence of their star player will have on their league form, last week it was revealed that Barcelona star Lionel Messi would miss the rest of the year and they lost their next La Liga game, their first of the season, so they hope it doesn’t happen again.

Their opponents this Saturday are Werder Bremen and they will be looking to pick up their fifth win of the season and move up from their position as 14th on the ladder.

They come into this game on the back of a thrilling 4-4 draw against Hoffenheim in a game that saw them trail 4-2 at one stage and Philipp Bargfrede’s injury time goal secured a point.
