David Moyes will wait until New Year’s Day before deciding if Wayne Rooney is fit enough to play in United’s evening encounter with Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Rooney missed last Saturday’s 1-0 win at Norwich with a groin problem and will be assessed ahead of the match, which kicks off at 17:30 GMT. His fellow striker Robin van Persie looks less likely to feature against Spurs due to a thigh injury picked up in the win over Shakhtar Donetsk on 10 December.

“We need to wait and see,” said Moyes on Rooney at his New Year’s Eve press briefing at the Aon Training Complex. “He didn't train today so we'll assess him tomorrow and see how he is.

“Van Persie is not quite ready yet, but hopefully he's not too far away.”

The Reds’ first opponents of 2014 are under new management, with Tim Sherwood having succeeded Andre Villas-Boas. The Portuguese’s team played out a 2-2 draw with United at the start of December, but a 5-0 defeat at home to Liverpool two weeks later proved to be the former Chelsea boss’ last game in charge.  Moyes, however, is wary of his side’s next opponents regardless of whom their manager is.

“Tottenham have always been difficult opponents no matter who the manager has been,” he added. “They have a really good side, spend well and always try to reward the manager with the players required. Tottenham have either been in the Champions League or pushing for it and have always been a good, strong team.”
