Premier League champions Manchester United could make a move for AS Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Red Devils are keen to sign another central defender as Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic enter the final years of their careers.

And it's believed that 26-year-old Benatia, who has cemented his reputation as one of the best defenders in Serie A after joining AS Roma from Udinese in the summer, is on David Moyes' shortlist.

Italian media organisation Calcio Mercato report that United have initiated discussions to find out whether a deal is possible, but negotiations have not yet started between the two parties.

Benatia is a Morocco international who began his professional career with Marseille before moving to Udinese via a two-year stint at Clermont.

However, as well as Benatia, Manchester United have also been linked with the likes of Cristian Zapata, Andrea Ranocchia and Ezequiel Garay.
