Chelsea are on alert over Portuguese full-back Fabio Coentrao amidst uncertainty over his future at Real Madrid.

The Daily Express reports that the 28-year-old is on the verge of leaving Los Blancos this summer, whilst Spanish paper Marca claims the left-sided defender is more likely to leave than stay in the transfer window.

Madrid have claimed that the player has missed the opening days of pre-season training for personal reasons, but speculation that Coentrao could join Jose Mourinho at Chelsea continues to grow.

Despite featuring regularly at the Santiago Bernabeu, the former Benfica star has never been popular with the club's supporters, and has previously stated that a 'solution' would need to be found if he wasn't wanted.

He's also left the door open to a move to Chelsea in the past, admitting he wouldn't shut the door on any team.

The Express claims Madrid will want a figure in the region of £17million for Coentrao, although his arrival in west London would pose questions over the future of Ashley Cole.

The England international has been a mainstay in the position at Stamford Bridge under a number of different managers, but the arrival of a 36-cap international would provide some very strong competition at Chelsea.
