Gareth Bale’s future is back in the melting pot with Manchester United allegedly preparing a £60million bid for Tottenham’s talisman.

But if that offer materialises it is doomed to fail and actually appears embarrassingly weak given Real Madrid’s concentrated courting of the Wales international.

Bernabeu mouthpiece Zinedine Zidane has stated that Real are not afraid to pay £80million to buy Bale and Spurs have not buckled.

Why would they then sell to Premier League rivals for 25 per cent less than they could bank in a deal with a foreign club in a transfer which would be easier for fans to swallow?

United have either got their sums wrong or the officials who compile their transfer calculations have spent the summer living in a cave without any television, newspaper or internet access.

Bale, who celebrated his 24th birthday earlier this week, is as short as 1/5 with Ladbrokes to still be at White Hart Lane at the end of the summer transfer window while the same firm quote 2/1 he will be at Old Trafford.

Sky Bet have chalked up 8/1 he will be a Galactico at Real Madrid and punters who shop around can get 33/1 or better the former Southampton starlet will join any other club in the next 46 days.

The banker of the month, however, is Sky Bet’s 5/6 that Bale stays at Spurs. That’s worth your maximum outlay because sources close to Tottenham suggest the best player to pull on their famous lilywhite shirt since Paul Gascoigne is happy to remain where he is for at least one more season.
