Manchester City have sold Maicon to Roma for around £3million after making just 11 appearances for the the deposed Premier League champions.
The Brazil international arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Inter Milan last summer with a huge reputation but the full-back failed to deliver for former City boss Roberto Mancini.
New manager Manuel Pellegrini told the 31-year-old defender he did not feature in his plans and he was not part of City’s pre-season tour of South Africa.
Maicon had a medical in Rome on Monday and City confirmed this morning that he has returned to Serie A on a permanent basis to play for Roma.
City are prepared to let England international Micah Richards and Pablo Zabaleta fight for the right to play at right-back with the Argentinian expected to prevail after a series of impressive displays last season.
Maicon’s departure frees some big wages off the books as City expect to take their summer spending to £70 million when Alvaro Negredo completes his move from Sevilla later today.
