Jose Mourinho has made his latest bid to lure Wayne Rooney to Chelsea by warning the striker a season on the sidelines for Manchester United could dent his England chances.

United boss David Moyes yesterday said he has no intention of letting the 27-year-old leave Old Trafford this summer, as he is required as back-up to frontman Robin van Persie.

And with those comments riling wantaway Rooney, Mourinho has taken the opportunity to inflame the situation by reminding the forward of his international ambitions.

‘If Wayne is a second choice for Manchester United, then the national team will be affected,’ said the Portuguese ahead of the Blues’ first pre-season fixture against Singha All-Stars, who beat Moyes’ side 1-0 last weekend.

Mourinho’s latest attempt to lure Rooney to Stamford Bridge came on the same day as Blues transfer target Edinson Cavani was unveiled by big-spending Paris Saint-Germain, who are believed to have splashed out around £54m on the Uruguayan international.

Chelsea have already missed out on Radamel Falcao this summer in their hunt for a new frontman and now Mourinho looks determined to use everything in his arsenal to bring Rooney to west London.
