So far this season, the Gunners have scored 33 goals in all competitions, with eight of those courtesy of in-form frontman Olivier Giroud. But as former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson told talkSPORT, the club’s title challenge could crumble should the Frenchman succumb to injury.
Beyond him, Arsenal only have Nicklas Bendtner as a fit, recognised senior striker, with the need to sign suitable back-up becoming an issue of debate.
A number of potential targets have been mooted in the tabloids, each with equally impressive price tags. However, with Arsenal already having splashed out a king’s ransom on landing Mesut Ozil, funds for further strengthening may be bare, although there is one name which could prove to be a dark horse should Arsene Wenger decide to take the plunge. Still just 24 years old, the Brazilian has endured a mixed career thus far and now finds himself back in his homeland at Corinthians after five-and-a-half years with AC Milan.
Throughout his time in Italy, Pato showed glimpses of just why he was regarded as one of world football’s most exciting strikers, scoring exquisite goals to reflect the hype that surrounded him.
However, his own battle with injuries meant that by the time Milan decided to send him packing, talk was of a talent unfulfilled. Labels of ‘failure’ are a little harsh, but his personal highlights at the San Siro were often fleeting, despite Pato clearly being a player of vast talent.
His return to Brazil was initially met with fanfare, although that has since subsided and now he could be on the move again. Corinthians director Roberto de Andrade ruled out a transfer to another Brazilian side, but interestingly named Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur as potential destinations.
“Considering his value, I think it's hard that he moves to another Brazilian club,” he said.
"If those two clubs [Arsenal and Tottenham] are interested in Pato, we don't rule out selling him in the winter transfer market.”
A move to Arsenal could well be the best thing for him. The Gunners have a good record in helping players overcome persistent injuries and could offer Pato the platform necessary to keep him in contention for a 2014 World Cup spot with Brazil.
