Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United are building momentum at exactly the right time of the season and hopes the in-form Reds can flourish throughout November and December.
In an exclusive interview with United Review, the official match programme at Old Trafford, the 28-year-old striker also discusses his burgeoning partnership with Robin van Persie, as well as United's pivotal win over Stoke City...
David Moyes says he is seeing signs that you and Robin van Persie are forging a strong partnership. Is that how it feels to you? Yeah, of course. I think that’s the main thing for any forward, you’re trying to work together to score and create goals. It’s great for the team if myself and Robin can create chances for each other and score goals that are helping us to win matches. It’s really enjoyable for us as players to play that way. We’re both creative players and I think that’s why we’re working well. We’ve started the season in good form, but we’re always looking to be better on the pitch.
Does that partnership come naturally or is it something you work on at the Aon Training Complex?
It’s a bit of both. We’re both good enough players to adapt to any situation really, whether you’re playing high up or dropping deeper to get on the ball. But you have to remember that we’ve also got Chicharito, who has been in good scoring form recently, and Danny Welbeck, who is also a big asset to the team. They also want to play and score goals for the team.
It feels like there’s a bit of momentum building after a difficult start to the season. Is that how you see it?
We’ve played better in the last few games than we have all season and it was always going to be the case with a new manager coming in, that we’re taking his ideas onto the pitch. We’re finally finding our feet now and putting into the games exactly what the manager wants us to. I’m really pleased with that and we’re on a good run at the minute and I think November and December are two really big months for us. We’ve got a lot of games coming up and we want to get through these two months with some good results.
Some said the Stoke game, coming back from 2-1 down to win, might have been a turning point…
The Stoke game probably wasn’t out best performance, but what it showed was the great spirit and desire that we have. We knew at half-time that we had to win that game. Anything other than three points wasn’t going to be good enough. We had already dropped points and we didn’t want to drop any more. We showed great determination in our game that day and a good discipline in the areas we needed to so that we could get back into the match. That was a massive result for us and it’s had an impact when you look at the games and the results we have had after that.
How do you feel your form has been? You look like you’re enjoying yourself…
I’ve said all along that I just want to play football and I feel I’ve started the season well and scored a few goals and I’m creating chances for my team-mates too. I’m enjoying that and I want to put all my focus on trying to help the team get back towards the top of the table. That’s the aim for us all and if I can contribute to that then it’d be great.
