Jose Mourinho is ready to listen to offers for David Luiz in the January transfer window as he attempts to raise funds to restructure Chelsea's defence. Should a sale be approved by Roman Abramovich, Mourinho will look to recruit the reliable central defender he feels his back four is lacking.

Arguably the most physically and technically gifted centre back in the Premier League, David Luiz has pockmarked his club career in both Portugal and England with unnecessary errors. Mourinho, who prides himself on his teams' defensive organisation, has been disappointed by the Brazil international's failure to retain focus within matches despite extensive coaching.

The Chelsea manager has used David Luiz in just five Premier League fixtures, failing to deploy him at all since the momentum damaging loss to Newcastle United at the beginning of the month. Mourinho's concerns with the Brazilian, coupled with Gary Cahill's shortcomings, have forced him to reinstall the slow and ageing John Terry as Chelsea's first-choice centre back.

Ironically, Mourinho had identified the position as one of three significant weakness in Chelsea's squad ahead of his summer return to the club, recommending that David Luiz be sold before the season began. An offer worth a potential €30million from Barcelona, however, was rejected by Abramovich as he elected to overstock on attacking midfielders by sanctioning a £30m transfer fee for Willian.

After impressing Mourinho with his attitude in pre-season, David Luiz was granted the opportunity to establish himself as a regular in the team but failed to take advantage. Though he remains a starter for Brazil alongside Thiago Silva, it may prove difficult to secure a higher fee this winter.

Mourinho also faces increased competition for the signature of Eliaquim Mangala, the young France international he advocated reinforcing Chelsea's defence with in the close season. FC Porto do not intend to release the powerfully built 22-year-old for less than €45million and believe they may be able to instigate an auction for his services amidst interest from other Champions League clubs and AS Monaco.
