Marco Reus: Borussia Dortmund
In November, it was said Man United were planning to raid Champions League finalists Dortmund for home-grown star Marco Reus. At the time it was reported that Shinji Kagawa would be offered a return to the German club in a cash-plus-player swap deal. In the Bundesliga this season the attacking midfielder has scored seven times in 14 games and created five goals and the Old Trafford scouts have clearly been impressed with what they have seen. His 18 strikes for Monchengladbach earned him the 2012 German Player of the Year award.

Ivan Rakitic: Sevilla
Goal scoring, creative midfielders is what is needed at Man United, according to Alan Shearer, whose opinion has been shared by many fans throughout the season. The middle of the park is not the strongest at Old Trafford, so here are six quality players for David Moyes' consideration starting with Ivan Rakitic. The Sevilla star's agent and brother said the player is “honoured” by the level of interest in him, which includes Man United. The 25-year-old Croatian has scored seven times in 14 La Liga games and also created five goals.

Luka Modric: Real Madrid
United have been linked with Reus' Dortmund team-mate Gundogan, but with reports in Spain that Real Madrid are on the verge of signing him, could Modric become available? A back injury has sidelined Gundogan since August, while the former Tottenham star has enjoyed a run of games in the Real team this season. He has yet to score, however, but has created two goals in La Liga this term. Modric has long been a target of United and despite telling the press he is happy in Madrid, added competition is likely to at least get him considering other clubs.

Wesley Sneijder: Galatasaray
Sneijder is still producing the performances that made him so sought after prior to Galatasaray dropping a sackful of money in front of him and convincing him the Turkish league was the place for him. The 29-year-old moved there in the summer from Inter despite interest from Man United and has so far scored four goals in nine Super League appearances. One rumour is that Nani and Antonio Valencia will be offered in exchange for the Dutchman

Andrea Pirlo: Juventus
He may be 34, but Pirlo is still a creative force. His passing, shooting and set pieces stand him out among football's best and there is a lot he can offer Man United. Tom Cleverley, who has taken a large amount of flack in recent weeks would surely improve with Pirlo's calming influence around. The Italian is out of contract in the summer and former Juve ace Marco Tardelli reckons if Pirlo plays well, the whole team improves. “Andrea is a special player. I would advise him to try to play in the Premier League,” he said. Free-kick master Pirlo has scored three times in 13 Serie A games this season. His one assist came in the Champions League, though he is currently out for the remainder of the year with a knee injury

Paul Pogba: Juventus
Since leaving Old Trafford Pogba in 2012 he has been crowned Player of the Tournament at the U20 World Cup, which France won and now looks set to be included in the senior side for Brazil 2014. He has scored four goals and created as many in 19 Serie A and Champions League appearances this term. He has been linked with a move back to Manchester, but is said to be close to signing a new contract in Italy. Unless United are prepared to pay an astronomical amount for a player they've only just realised is good enough for the first team, it is the least likely to happen
