Manchester United consider Barcelona target as Vidic replacement
Manchester United have sent scouts to watch Villarreal centre-back Mateo Musacchio – and may have identified the 23-year-old as a potential replacement for Nemanja Vidic, who is wanted by Roberto Mancini at Galatasaray, according to the Daily Mail.
Vidic, whose contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer, has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona. However, it's believed that Galatasaray currently lead the chase for the 32-year-old, who could leave the Red Devils for nothing at the end of the season.
Instead, the Turkish giants could offer United a reduced fee for the Premier League champions' captain, in order to sign him this month.
David Moyes could then make a move for Musacchio, who has been looked at by Barcelona and Manchester City in recent months.
The Argentina international joined Villarreal from River Plate in 2009 and has impressed in the both the second and first tiers of Spanish football.
Robbie Cooke, United's chief scout, watched the defender in action during Monday night's La Liga clash between Villarreal and Rayo Vallecano – although it's currently unclear whether Moyes will make a move for the player who has drawn favourable comparisons with the legendary Daniel Passarella.
