Juan Mata is set to hold showdown talks with Chelsea bosses over his future this week, with Atletico Madrid waiting in the wings,

Mata’s father and agent, Juan senior, is set to travel to London this week to discuss his son’s future with the Blues hierarchy.

La Liga title chasers Atletico are said to have been lined up as potential January suitors. Diego Simeone’s side are hoping to tie up a loan move until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent transfer.

Spanish international Mata is concerened about his World Cup place, after falling down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho.

He knows he is likely to miss out on the defending champions’ star-studded squad without playing regular first team football, and is therefore keen for a January move.

Mata told friends he was ‘angry’ at his treatment from Mourinho, who subbed the playmaker after just 52 minutes on New Years Day – the latest in a long line of snubs from the Chelsea boss.

Mata’s reaction that day suggested all was not well, and Mourinho said after the game that the ‘door was open’ for Mata should he decide to leave, although he wants the Spaniard to stay.

There has also been interest from Italy, with former Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez keen to bring the midfielder to Napoli, while Inter Milan have also been linked.
