ACF Fiorentina forward Giuseppe Rossi is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in the 1-0 Serie A victory over AS Livorno Calcio on Sunday.

The 26-year-old has a history of cruciate ligament trouble having recovered from potentially career-threatening injuries in October 2011 and April 2012 during his spell at Villarreal CF. This time, tests have revealed "collateral ligament damage on his right knee", meaning surgery should not be necessary. However, Dr Richard Steadman, who operated on Rossi after his second cruciate ligament injury, will visit the Italian international in the next few days to determine the extent of the problem.

Rossi, who joined Fiorentina in January 2013 when still overcoming his previous complaint, is the leading scorer in Serie A with 14 goals in 18 games this term. The striker also has one UEFA Europa League goal to his name, with Vincenzo Montella's Viola due to face Danish side Esbjerg fB in the round of 32.
